well i got the note pad part of it... but you should attempt in opening nix files in notepad.... or at least my success rate in doing so hasn't been very high... instead you should use wordpad in opening any kind of configuration file or "README" / "INSTALL"

it is possible you are running a firewall like Dukat said. could also be that your listen blocks are not correct.. If you used a wild card for the ip, i would suggest setting one then trying to connect with the set IP.
