SSL - What is Used Most?

Post by Xeon »

I'm new to IRCD's and I'm putting together my first Unreal ircd now as I type.

One of the biggest questions I have concerning the config file and running an IRCD is the issue or running SSL or not running SSL.

It seems to me that not all clients will support SSL and although I like the idea of the security aspect, I'm not sure that it's a viable thing to do.

Can any of you indicate to me what you are doing, and what it is that most IRCD owners/Operators are doing with regards to SSL? Do most use SSL or do most don't use it?

Any and all feedback here would be appreciated.

As it doesnt take much to use it, it's better to offer it. I know quite a few people that won't connect to a network without ssl-- personally, i don't really give a hoot one way or the other, but i offer it to my users anyway.

If a network offers SSL, and I know about it, I always attempt to connect via SSL (although I don't mind connecting normally).

I would not consider not using SSL when linking servers.

I agree. Setting up SSL on mIRC is very quick and easy. As for other clients, most in my experience do have SSL support one way or another. Where I the same as the other posters will still join a non SSL network, I always use SSL if I know it is available.

Since it usually is not that difficult to impliment in the server, I would always offer it. It is better to offer something nobody uses, then to not offer something someone may want. There are networks which are ONLY SSL, and they do fairly well. So there are quite a few users out there who do use SSL on a regular basis.
