Unreal does not ship with that capability so it must be a custom module. The only other address that I can think of that would be unique enough and available to the public would be a hardware MAC address, which collecting is well outside the scope of IRC it's self, not to mention Unreal. the only other explanation is it's really a CIDR ban on you.

A users' MAC address can't be seen on the internet. MAC (Ethernet) takes place on layer 2, and all IP routing is on layer 3. So as soon as it traverses the first router, the information on the source mac address is lost. Read about OSI layers if you want to know more.

They probably want to make you believe it's something great, unchangeable, a perfect ban.

In all cases I've ever seen banning is no magic. It is some distinct property on which you are banned, which can be: nick name, username / ident, host / IP (range), real name, channel(s) you join, CTCP version reply, ..

Connection refused means that nothing is listening on that IP and port. It has nothing to do with bans at all.

Indeed. Or a firewall, but at least something that happens *before* UnrealIRCd even sees the connection.

*grin*.. if I were to format my pc every time I got a connection refused somewhere.. ;)
