Need remote terminal access software

I have my website hosted on a Debian Linux host and am using an iMac for development. I want to install UnrealIRCD software on the host but it appears to require command line access to extract the files and compile a running version of the program.

I would appreciate it if someone could point me in the direction of a remote terminal program that runs on a Mac that I can use to try to install the necessary software.

Your Debian host should have an SSH server that you may connect to and log in from for command-line access. Mac OS has a built in SSH client that may be used, or you may use a 3rd party SSH client (there are many out there).

For instructions on using the Mac OS integrated SSH client, please read http://apple.blogoverflow.com/2012/02/h ... -mac-os-x/

OK, I tried that but either the connection is refused or it times out, depending upon what I try as the "server". I think that what I need is the link to the actual server my website is hosted on and a secure form of access, since my site is supposed to be secure. I have a feeling the only ones who can tell me that are the support people at my host. :(

Just heard back from my host. They do not allow their clients shell access on shared servers due to security reasons. Their solution is to rent me a dedicated server which would cost a LOT more than I'm currently paying.

Looks like I'm going to have to give up my idea of installing UnrealIRCD. :(

Just get an ircd friendly host. Google can help you with that.

I just may have to do that eventually. I've been with this host literally for years, mainly because of their service. Lately, I've been having problems, UrealIRCD is not the first, so am having thoughts of switching to someone else.

My only concern is that when I paid for an irc friendly host once before, they pulled the plug half way through my contract and ran off with all the fee. I'm gun-shy about trying anyone I don't have a long track record with.

For Shells:
http://lomag.net - in business since 1998. Little pricey but you get what you pay for. The owner (Mark, irc nick "lomag") is a longtime IRC user so knows it inside and out. There are thousands of others but lomag is the only shell host i'll ever recommend because I know Mark and the quality he offers.

For VPS (virtual private server):
http://linode.com - rather popular VPS provider I've used them and had no issues.

http://chunkhost.com - nice "hands on" host. I've used them for years with no issues. Hands on means no fancy control panel or knowledge base for support. If you are like me, you don't need that stuff anyway. If you need lots of tech support, go elsewhere.

For Dedicated servers:
http://fdcservers.net Best dedi's I've even used. 390gbps backbone and all IPs have DDoS mitigation included and their bandwidth is unmetered and damn good price. Excellent support.

There are thousands of solutions out there, but I don't recommend stuff I don't know about or have had bad experiences with. This coming February marks my 18th year on IRC ad I've been an IRCop/admin for nearly all of that time so I'm not some kid recommending "cool" things, but sites I know work.

Hope that helps.

Thanks! It does and it doesn't. Unfortunately, I am on a budget as I am paying for all this out of my own pocket and am on a limited, fixed income with no increase in site. I will be 66 in January, so that may give you an idea why. At this point I would almost settle for finding an existing server that wouldn't mind me setting up a private room for my members but it's been so long since I was last on IRC that I don't know any good (and safe) servers any more.

My ideal solution would be if someone came up with a way to remotely install UnrealIRCD to a host using only FTP. I know how to upload and download files, change file and folder permissions, etc, I just don't have root level access. :(

Hmm, If I set up a "virtual server" on my Mac, extracted the files there and set up UnrealIRCD it seems logical that I should then be able to just then copy over everything intact and expect it to work. Does anyone have any ideas about that possible option?

[Added]
I just checked out Shell Accounts on your first option and they want more per month than I am currently paying for my hosted website account!

viningc.

The files have to be compiled on the machine they will run on (or at least compiled on the same os with the exact same configuration), as they binary is dependent on the configuration. So compiling on a mac and moving to debain will never work. If you want a simple chat room, you are more than welcome to join our small network for a room. You will find the staff very friendly.

Yeah, had a feeling that was the case. Now if I just had a Debian Server running on one of my spare computers ...

Thank you and I do appreciate the offer but many of my members are potentially under age and I don't want to take any chances by sending them anywhere else. I want to have 110% control over their experience, their parents wouldn't understand if I allowed them to "officially" go somewhere I don't have control over after forcing them to sign a COPPA statement to allow their child to join our forum. :(

I might join just to reacquaint myself if you want to post a link and login information ...

I really enjoyed running a Chat Server when I had Unreal up and running before too. Ah well, perhaps in the future.

I will give you a free shell account. Give me a day or so to set it up.

Note to everyone else. I do NOT give out free shells!!!!! This is a random act of kindness!

LMAO!! rare, I know but I'm not a 100% a**, just 99.997% ;)

Wait until later this year when I get my new boxen built, I'll donate a shell to the project.
