Erroneous Nickname: Illegal characters - ÆØÅ characters

I am trying to make my UnrealIRCd support the danish letters ÆØÅ and I have added latin1 as one of the supported nick languages according to the documentation but it still get the same error. Is it me that is doing something wrong?
I had someone from the unreal-support chat pop on the server to help, but he couldn't help despite a valiant and much appreciated effort. If you need bits of the config let me know and I will gladly post it. And if it isn't possible to get Unreal to accept æøå then just let me know and I will scrap the idea right away
