DCC2

Post by codemastr »

Over the last couple of days, a lot of buzz has been generated about a new DCC proposal called DCC2 (http://www.dcc2.org). Basically, I want to know what Unreal user's opinions are about this idea. DCC2 is a complete rewrite of DCC that adds new features such as encryption, IPv6 support, and multiple file sends. Obviously, this greatly increases the security and usefulness of DCC.

There is however, a problem. DCC2 no longer sends the filename being sent to a user over IRC. What this means is, Unreal's deny dcc {} block, and spamfilter setting for dcc will become useless. Therefore, networks with rules banning mp3/porn/warez have no way to enforce them.

What I want to know is, as IRC users, and as IRC administrators, which is more important to you. Having the ability to use the new features of DCC2, or losing the ability to control which files are distributed by users on your IRC server. Basically, we are debating adding a feature to UnrealIRCd that would allow an admin to turn off DCC2's multi-filesend feature (which is the part that hides the filename). I would just like to know what user's think of banning this feature so as to allow admins to continue to control which files their users send.

personally i don't care about individual users sharing mp3's etc on my network, but i won't allow channels specifically for trading warez.

the biggest problem i can see is in worms being transfered over irc, without seeing the file name there is no way to help protect the users on the network

Having the ability to block files we know are potentially harmful always out weight "something new". When it comes to IRC Administration or IRC Security or just security we all should be in agreement that protecting our users should always remain our number one concern.

OK, DCC2 has obvious benefits, but the fact that filenames are no longer sent worries me for obvious reasons. For me, the best solution would be to allow the admins to choose - mulisends or filename sends?

Of course, we could always bitch and moan at the DCC2 coders :P

Personally, I think that so long as we have the option to disable it, or parts of it, that it'll be fine. I see no real problem with allowing multisends, but I do see a problem with hiding filenames sent. Maybe we should bitch to the DCC2 coders to change a few things about it. ;)

I agree with both points.

Have to agree . I dont want my server bein used for this sort of thing . I disable dcc in the scripts I distribute anyway . I think the dcc2 coders need to rethink this if we cant see whats being sent its just not safe.
