That's hardly a clean fight then, hehehe :P

I'd vote for both Windows and Linux, but as I can't vote for more than one option I'll have to abstain. (Or vote for "what's that?")

Office & personal use => Windows.
Servers => UN*X deffo.

Linux is good for a fiddle but when it's time to play, it's all Solaris/AIX/BSD for me. And the odd Windows server aside for more general purposes or situations that can't be set aside like certain applications build for SQL Server or Sharepoint. For all the reasons you guys allready know.

Less overhead, more efficient resources management, proven stability etc etc etc...

Windows as an epoch problem every 49.7 days - which would only be a problem if they can go that long without a reboot (the weekly/monthly updates that are 99.9% reboot-required fixes that "you better install now or you will be hacked" come to mind) :P .

Heh, I have a stand-alone Windows machine (my dev box) that goes for 30 days between reboots - no mean feat considering that I change its configuration all the time (depends what I happen to be playing with at the time).

Desktop, windows, hands down.
Servers, Linux, hands down.

I don't have a favorite OS per say, I use what is best for a situation and let personal preferences be hanged.

Windows does some servers much better then *nix, Active Directories is a nice example.

if your talking sheer uptime, *nix beats windows out. I maxed out an active windows desktop at around 7 weeks. in comparision, my linux server maxed out at 700+ days when an extended power outage brought it down. (btw, 2.4 kernel, the uptime will rollover at around 500 days)

Lets See... I have a lot of practice running several different OS's and distro.

Currently (workstation = winxp pro) (servers = freebsd/UNIX and one or two linux boxes out of my hands control over)

Of course it all depends on the use of the machine in order for me to determine the boxes use. Planning for getting the max out of the system.

FreeBSD hasn't let me down yet. Or at least I learn quickly to not let it.

Every windows computer i hava ever used has let me down one way or another. Slowness, viruses, spyware, updates, hot-fixes (not so hot), programs crashing, freezing programs (almost the same as crashing), and much much more. I think it is extreamly hard (at least for me.) to run a windows machine and not get problems. no matter the specs.

I run.

P4 3.4GHZ 64Bit HT, 2GB Memory, more space i know what to do with... and i still have tons of gliches, problems, and annoyence... but what i can do. Reformat... Never!

(installed for) 20w 2d 17h 29m <--- My longest windows install ever in life.

I used to format every two days when i turned 14! never keeping a install longer than 5 days. Making windows progress here...

Okay i'm bored now and sick of ranting!

We use Windows 2000 Advanced Server and FreeBSD v5.4 on our network. Both work well, both are stable, both have good uptimes and both are easy to manage locally and remotely. After 12 months of operation we have no need or intention on aligning to one particular OS over another.

This way of doing things also tests the various versions of the IRCd in the real world over time, the best kind of test it can get really.
