Has anyone been successful / tried running UnrealIRCd on a Windows 7 machine? I'm asking purely out of curiosity :) , as I have a Linux Box that has those capabilities. If I recall, back when I had Vista, it couldn't understand a .conf file and was not able to open it in Notepad correctly.

Unreal has not been officially tested on Windows 7 or Windows Vista. There are instructions on the forums for getting Unreal successfully running on Vista that should work for Windows 7 as well.

The number one problem that Vista/windows 7 users have with compatability issues on older applications is that the application in question will generally assume the user has admin rights to the machine and will install/run as such. where that changes in vista/7 where the default user access isn't at elevated access so the application will fail. See HERE for info on how to configure UAC.

Vista users atleast can change this in a few ways, 1 is compatability settings either globally or per application or disable the elevated security settings. Disabling the settings will leave your box open to the tens of thousands of know Windows viruses though, wehich is why it was introduced in Vista to start with to "jail" the user away from the sensitive sections of the core aka "kernel" as *nix based users already benefit from. This inherantly creates a more secure system and most viruses from XP and older do not affect Vista/7.

7 users also have XP mode to use, while I've not played with it, I'm not too keen on the idea of embedding or emulating any OS inside another.

Bottom line is the more you understand your OS of choice, the better your experience with it. There are companies that make money on users ignorance and create programs that can even cost hundreds of dollars to do things that the user could do already if they just understood how. Most compatability issues can be resolved in Vista/7 with a few mouse clicks while companies tell you "it wont work in vista, you need to go back to XP .. (it'll be $200 for me to reinstall that for you)"

I ran it locally for a test before putting it on my VPS, and it worked fine on Windows 7.
