Forum Google Ads

Post by w00t »

Can we get the colour of the slightly-irritating google ads the same as the ones on the main UnrealIRCd page?

{carson}
Right now, they're looking, like, terrible.

codemastr is handling that, but..
just would like to say it looks ok on the black theme :)

Some people have asked why we put ads on the site/forum.
The answer is obvious: to support the project.
Personally, I find google ads the most less-intrusive adstype I know :p.
/me personally hates animated banners etc (granted, we have one on the download page for a long time, but that's just on 1 place :P).

*edit* just looked with IE at the white theme, while it's more 'visual' than on the unrealircd page, it doesn't look bad to me (the colors, etc) :P */edit*

I don't think the gray border would work for the forums seeing as how there is no gray anywhere on the forums. If you have some other suggestions though, I'm glad to listen.

it's mostly the noticable bit that i dislike, but oh well :P

As for suggestions, sticking with the blue border looks fine.

Guys, if you're going for bulky adverts, can we increase the size of the "Hosted By" tag line?

Those googleads are advertising webhosting too, which I'm not exactly keen on :)

If you have a banner or something you'd rather have displayed, then send it over. But I'm not exactly going to go make up my own advertisement for your company...

By "increase the size" I meant increasing the font size.. I didn't mean for you to create a new tagline..

Before you get into a big argument over this keep one thing in mind please: many proxies have filtered out this kind of advertising through the use of SquidGuard. Over here I see absolutely nothing from the google ads, the 'unrealircd' logo is looking just as usual and the "hosted by" is the only thing I see here.

I'm not using any public 'adlists' or anything but I do know that google's ad URL's are commonly known. Personally I wonder how many visitors of your website will actually see the advertising.
With kind regards, Peter

The ads were added to unrealircd.com on March 7th, since then, they have been viewed 183,099 times. So apparently, there are quite a few people seeing them.

I don't mind the adverts there (we all need income to keep things going :)), it's just that some of the ads drew attention away from the company hosting these forums (We also need an income to keep our servers running :))

Is the new size better?

I hope so, if you make it even more large, then it would be bigger than our unrealircd logo ;pp.

In this case the hit amount doesn't mean people actually see it.

For example my proxy (Squid); I have setup a list from which I don't want to see any contents.. Before it can identify this content as "I don't want it" it needs to be adressed first. In other words; the page is downloaded as normal and only when my proxy identifies certain contents as originating from a certain point it will replace the contents with something else.

Therefor my box will still produce a hit but I don't see a thing.

Then quite simply put, Squid is a piece of crap. A good ad blocker can block the content without ever downloading it.

And in any case, I really don't care whether you are/are not seeing it. Others are. And, not only are they seeing it, they are clicking it.
