What is your opinion on requiring SSL on a server?
I use SSL, and I believe that everybody on the Internet should use it, but I do not think it should be required on a server. It's stupid because it severely limits the user base, and forces people to download more stuff.
What are your reasons for or against?
How many people on your network use SSL, as compared to the total?

It does tend to lag a server out. If you have a lot of SSL connections, you'll notice it.
That said, for those (ie opers etc), it's a great idea. For email connections, great also. For something stupid like viewing a HTML page on, say, rabbits, it isn't really necessary.
I provide SSL as a service to my users. If they ask, it's there. However, I don't encourage anyone (except our admin base) to use it.

How many people on your server/network use SSL, out of how many total users?

I also 'encourage' my fellow opers to use it but none of them listen.

Probably about 2 out of 20.

My network doesn't promote it but a growing majority of our users prefers it over a plain connection. I definitely wouldn't stop allowing plain connections, but a reserved port for ssl is absolutely something I'd consider mandatory.
Next to clients we're also planning to implement ssl server links between the major hubs, esp. links like US <> EU and such.

Our temporary servers don't have SSL at the moment

I'll work on getting SSL working properly on boo (it sometimes had "problems") when we've upgraded the OS.

on our network about 20~30 of 250 clients use ssl and network all links [hubs] use zip and ssl options.
