Usermode +S: What exactly does it do? I understand that it protects services, but still don't know what it protects them from.

This umode adds to client's whois line "is a Network Service" and removes anything else except "nick!ident@host info * realname" (for non-opers).
P.S. "Network Service"... Sounds gr8!, and this words will protect them :>

You need +q on channel to kick +S'ed users.
and for -qaoh - really:
a RootServ is a network service
q RootServ is a network service
o RootServ is a network service
h RootServ is a network service

If i remember correctly you need either user mode +a or to be ULined to kick a user with user mode +S or user mode +q. The modes i have refered to here are not channel modes just for clarification.
