Post by Sir »

Hi all!
First of all apologize cause of my bad english. :-)
I would like to know how I can use a free domain (like dyndns or no-ip ones) to host my unrealircd.
Please notice that i'm a newbie :P

Thank you in advance! :D

Not quite sure what you mean by that. To use either/or, you need an IP address from your shell host. That's what you should be using in your configuration files.

As to no-ip or dyndns, all they do is provide a link to your IP address, to direct traffic there. Somehow, I think that's a bit off the subject here.

If I've missed something, or messed it up, please feel free to clarify.

I'll try to explain better.
I want to know if it is possible to host an unrealircd server using ONLY the free host offered by no-ip or dyndns, and if possible, how I can do that?
I've already started unrealircd in localhost, but I can't understand how I can do that online in a proper way (cause i can't understand at all ip dns redirects etc etc).

:) Someone can please try to explain me in simple words? :D

I mean, a walkthrough it's the best thing i would expect, but if it is not possible i'll appreciate just a simple explanation! :D

You can't host unrealircd through such free hosts. They are just offering you some sort of domainname with is linked to the IP UnrealIRCd is running on (if you set it that way).

To make sure everybody on the Internet can connect to it, you must make sure the following:

1) Your router is configured the right way to accept connections from outside the LAN through some port (6667 I guess);
2) Your firewall needs to be turned off OR must accept connections through that port above (this is a better option than just turning it off)

To use a free domainname from for example no-ip, you'll just have to register with their services, find you're own (external) IP (hint: google) and add an A record to it.

Note that it can take up to five minutes before it becomes active, as I recall.

Good luck.
