unknown weird error

installed latest version of anope, then placed my old nicks.db and when i tried to start the services got this error
$ ./services
ELF binary type "0" not known.
./services: 1: Syntax error: "(" unexpected

Anope 1.8 has a different database structure than the Anope 1.7.23< branche has.
Click. So if you're upgrading from anything lower than 1.7.23 straight to Anope 1.8, you probably missed the conversion.

I actually just updated to 1.8.0 from 1.7.21 and I didn't have any problems AND I'm using the databases which were also used in .21. So my theory isn't the problem. I'm sorry.
Have you edited one of the db's manually? Or the services 'startup script' itself?

welll as i've said i just installed 1.8 and then uploaded my existing nick.db and services.conf in there ... and when i tried to start it i got that error. Nad i must say i really appreciate ur attempt
to help.

One last thing.. Did you download the official release from the Anope website?
