High bandwidth problems

Post by Sel »

I run a shell company and I noticed a lot of my Unrealircd custs are using a LOT of bandwidth, like 500kbit/s. None of these networks are over 1500 users, none of the servers have over 300. They're also getting a lot of ping timeouts. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to help my customers ? Versions very, one is using Unreal3.2.1 and one is using Unreal3.2-RC2fix. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Try asking them to upgrade for one :P

If they have server links, tell them to consider using ziplinks.
That's really about it.

Increase the ping frequency value. That will reduce the number of ping timeouts.

And about the bandwidth, well, you can have 10 users and use a lot of bandwidth. 10 flooding users will use more bandwidth than 1000 idle users. What I'd suggest is that the admins look into some of Unreal's anti-flood features some more are explained on http://www.vulnscan.org/UnrealIrcd/unre ... l#setblock but scroll down towards the bottom where it mentions set::anti-flood. Additionally, add protection software. At the very least, each server should have a copy of BOPM running to prevent against proxy attacks.
