Question about Services Admin and +i +s channel

Post by noone »

Hello,

I am trying to figure out why this is happening. I have Services Admin access to an IRC server and a Network Administrator (with Services Admin access as well) created a channel with +i +s

I tried to join that channel while i was opered up (I am Netadmin as well) but i got "unable to join channel (invite only)". Superadmin was set to on as well.
Is there something i am missing here?

In addition, when the other Netadmin sajoined me, i couldnt see the other people in the user list even though they were in the channel. I tried to find more documentation info about this situation but no luck.

If someone can point me somewhere to read about this or explain me in more depth what happened there i would really appreciate it.

Thank you

Firstly, NetAdmin or SuperAdmin do not mean "God Mode".

You can't just prance through your network disobeying they rules set on channels. If the channel is invite only (+i), you still have to use /invite to get in (or force your way in using SAJOIN).

The channel is likely also +u, so you won't see any users in it unless you're opped. If the channel is not +u, use /names #channel

Thank you for your answer Stealth.

I understand that NetAdmin != God but if i can force my way/invite myself in the channel why not just be able to join in normally? Is there an explanation about this or is this just the way things are?

Because this is how IRC works. Only god can break the rules, you're only a netadmin so you still have to follow them.

The reason it's designed this way is because contrary to popular belief, the channel is not yours. If the owner of the channel wants people to be invited, that is their right. The "god" that is being refered to is "you can't just barge in because you are a netadmin" point that Stealth was pointing out. Even if you own the network, the channel belongs to the user that registered it, so if it's invite only, then respect it!

If the chanops/owner is violating network rules then remove them, but leave the channel alone. You will retain more users that way.

I agree with what you say katsklaw, I just wanted to be sure :)

I was just pointing out that if i can force my way in there then a normal join is the same thing and the only reason that something keeps me outside of a channel, is like you said, my own ethics and by respecting what the channel owner wants.

No, a normal join is not the same. With the forced join you have to perform different/additional commands to enter. This is on purpose so you don't accidently join a channel as you could if it was done the exact same as a normal join.

See the difference?
